How ferries fit into a Norway road trip
There are around 130 ferry connections in Norway. In many regions they are not optional scenic extras — they are the normal way to cross a fjord, reach an island, or continue a road where no bridge or tunnel exists. If you are driving across the country, ferries are part of almost every long route.
Most car ferries take vehicles on a turn-up-and-go basis, though some popular summer crossings can be booked ahead. Prices depend on vehicle length, and they add up quickly on a ferry-heavy route.
Save up to 50% on ferry fares
With an AutoPASS for ferry prepayment agreement, private customers pay 50% of the normal fare on most included crossings — a real saving on a long road trip. The AutoPASS tag alone only gives about 10%. We explain exactly how to set it up, how much to prepay, and which ferries are excluded in our guide to the 50% AutoPASS ferry discount.
