Plan your trip to Norway
Planning a Norway vacation? Tell the planner when you're going, what you love and how you'll get around. You'll get a day-by-day Norway itinerary with places to see, drive times, overnight stops and a cost estimate. It only takes a few minutes, and you can change anything later.
How to plan a trip to Norway in four steps
- When and who. Pick a season or exact dates, how many days you have, who's coming with you and your pace — from 2 to 10 hours of sightseeing and driving a day.
- What you love. Choose from fjords, waterfalls, glaciers, famous hikes, viewpoints, fishing villages, stave churches, Viking sites and the northern lights. Not sure? Pick a ready-made mix.
- How you travel. Car or camper (add its length and fuel use), plane, or still undecided. Then choose where to sleep: hotels, apartments, hostels or campsites.
- Start and finish. Choose where your trip starts and ends, and the planner builds the route in between.
What you get
- Your route, day by day, with places that match your interests.
- Drive times between stops, and a town to stay in each night.
- A cost estimate for the whole trip: entrance fees, parking, fuel or charging (petrol, diesel or electric), ferries, road tolls and accommodation.
- Open any place in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze and drive straight there.
How many days do you need in Norway?
- 7 days: one region at an easy pace, such as the fjords of western Norway or Lofoten.
- 10 days: two regions, or one region with more hikes and fewer hours on the road.
- 2 weeks: the fjords and the north in one trip, or a long road trip with time to stop along the way.
The planner fits the route to your days and pace, so a relaxed week looks very different from an active one.
When to go
Summer brings long days and open mountain roads. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun doesn't set for part of the summer. Winter is northern lights season in the north, but many mountain roads close. When you pick exact dates, the calendar shows the season, how busy it is, the temperature, rain and hours of daylight for each day.
What does a trip to Norway cost?
Your route shows what your trip will actually cost, not an average. It adds up entrance fees and parking at each stop, fuel for your car, ferry tickets (with the AutoPASS discount, if you have it), road tolls and a night's stay in each town. Flights, food and souvenirs aren't included.
By car, campervan or plane
Norway is easiest to explore on a self-drive trip by car or campervan. If you're in a camper, use the campervan trip planner: it takes your camper's length into account for ferries and works out fuel from its consumption. Flying in? Choose where you land, and your route starts from there.

June to August, for long days and open mountain roads. For the northern lights, go north in autumn or winter.
